Cardboard is very good for a quick model or for a more detailed model built up in layers, but it does require a sharp blade to be cut neatly.

When the knife starts to tear the surface, try lowering the handle to give the blade a chance to penetrate the card slowly. If this doesn't work then change the blade.

It can be glued with PVA to give a strong structure.
